Important Training Information for Parents and Leaders

Troop 502 has been blessed over the last few years with nearly 20 Eagle Scouts and counting. Many of those Eagle Scouts came to the troop with involved registered adult parents or parents who became valuable ASMs. We strongly encourage any current scout parent to take the training to become an Assistant Scoutmaster. You will learn the same skills that your scout has learned on his way to First Class. Many hands make light work and the rewards that you will experience from being involved with your scout will be immeasurable.

Required for all Registered Adults:

Youth Protection Training (YPT):

  • BSA requires that this training be updated annually. (BSA does not care that your profile says that the training is good for two years. It’s NOT). This year the training must be completed by October 1, 2018. Only the YPT 2.0 will be accepted.

  • Go to: https://my.scouting.org and sign in on my.Scouting. (Do NOT create a new my.Scouting account if you already have one.) Once signed in, click on the round red/black/white YPT logo located on the right side of the page. When completed, please email your trained certificate to Stephen Kalb at srkalb@gmail.com.

Required for all ASMs:

Hazardous Weather training

  • In addition to YPT, Hazardous Weather is another required ASM training. This course (SCO_800) was updated in April 2018, and the previous Hazardous Weather course (WS81) has been retired. Go to: https://my.scouting.org and sign in on my.Scouting. (Do NOT create a new my.Scouting account if you already have one.) Finding the course is still several clicks away … once signed in, click on the rectangular red/white BSA Learn Center box. When on the BSA Learn Center page, scroll down to the heading “Program Specific Training” centered in the middle of the page and click the “Boy Scouting” box, which shows 4 boys hiking. Next page, click on “Scoutmaster Training.” Next page, click Option 3: “Scoutmaster – Position Trained.” Next page, click Option 6: “Hazardous Weather Training.” Phew! If you were able to get to the training, allow 30 minutes to complete. When completed, please email your certificate to Stephen Kalb at srkalb@gmail.com. For our Council, this training is annual. The training must be completed by November 1, 2018.

Adults willing to train as ASMs:

  • Scoutmaster Specific Online Training ( one-time - approx. 3 hours). Go to www.my.scouting.org From the Home page look on the right side for a box, BSA Learn Center. Scroll down to the Program Specific Training for Boy Scouting. On the next page select Scoutmaster Training Position Specific Training. Once you start the course you can save your progress and come back to finish at another time. When you do finish the course let Will Ferguson know by email.

  • Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills - ASMs are also required to complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) Training. This is a one-time 2-day overnight training.
